Did you know trees get sick? They have ailments just like humans; fungus, pests, and rot. At times, and if caught early enough, the tree can be saved. Many times, the tree must be removed before it becomes a danger to the surrounding areas. Here are some tips to help you spot diseased trees and what to do about them.
Bacterial and fungal infections
are common and can be spread in a few ways; pests, through spores from the fungus itself, and with contaminated tools. Signs that your tree may be infected include bare outer branches, mushrooms at the base of the tree, and dead or deformed leaves. Many times, these trees can be saved with the help of a tree expert/arborist.

Pests
Wood boring bugs, caterpillars, and sap sucking insects can cut off paths that give the tree the nutrients they need. Most of the time, pests are beneficial, but there will be signs if you have this issue. An abundance of leaf holes, premature yellowing, tiny holes in the trunk, or sawdust at the base of the tree are signs that your tree is in distress.
Rot
can be caused by poor drainage, overwatering, or structural damage. Rot usually appears as loss of leaves, carpenter ants, or mushrooms growing on the trunk.
These are all treatable issues, but they must be caught early. The first thing to do is contact your local arborist to assess the tree. We suggest calling Randy Cyr with Green Tree DoctorGreen Tree Doctor.
